There was some time spent at the weekend picking the materials for my Chapbook project. Some of these are ‘new’ and others are recycled. They’ll be what is utilised for the end plates and covers. The papers below will appear as well of a number of monoprints which will act as complimentary illustrations to the work itself. I had a good two hours at that on Sunday, which was very much a learning experience.
Because we have a blue theme going on, I have found an opportunity to incorporate portions of my favourite piece of ukiyo-e: The Great Wave off Kanagawa by the Japanese artist Hokusai, which was created in 1831. Once the basic framework of the chapbooks is complete, we'll be hand finishing them too, and I intend to do some video of the process as we go along.
The long-term plan is to standardise this process and use it for Pelmanism, after which we’ll have a look at what’s been learnt and attempt to improve on the next run of work. I expect this to be fiddly, and being mindful of environmental concerns I’ve tried wherever possibly to upcycle existing materials and fabrics in my possession, or use items from charity shops.
The end product will still be roughly pamphlet size, but probably a fair deal more robust. This one will be handstitched (pages to covers) which is the next part of the puzzle to be put together. The thread and needles that I need were already available from a project I helped the youngest with back when they were completing A Level Product Design.
I’ll be sharing my adventures with that at the end of the week…
